Vision for Laguna North Lakes’ Convention and Events Centre Unveiled

20 July 2017.

Brisbane-based property developers the George Group and Pointcorp have unveiled their plans for a mixed-use convention and events centre located in its highly-anticipated joint venture development ‘Laguna’ in the heart of the North Lakes CBD.

The convention and events centre will be one of the largest purpose-built venues in northern Brisbane and will fulfil strong local community demand for flexible spaces for private and commercial events. Current demand is reliant on spaces in Brisbane’s CBD, some 26 kilometres away.

George Group Director, Patrick George, said that the adaptable venue will not only satisfy the commercial requirements for the many companies that will eventually call Laguna North Lakes home, but will also accommodate private community events, including weddings and other celebrations.

“Our vision for this venue is to redefine the perception of a typically impersonal and bland convention experience we are accustomed to.  Rather than attending functions in insipid and often isolated buildings, this experience will be vibrant and stimulating as it will be part of a larger lively precinct.  It will sit above a beautiful tree-lined high street with bustling curated retail and food and beverage outlets, and its terrace will overlook a community green space and lagoon-style pool,” Mr George said.

“We envisage it will be used for everything from large-scale conventions, trade fairs and seminars, to cultural exhibitions, music concerts and local community events, right down to intimate private gatherings and celebrations such as weddings.  We will counter-balance the commercial usage by actively encouraging the local community to utilise the spaces too.  Like the broader Laguna precinct, it will be for everyone,” he added.

Clever design ensures flexibility

The venue will feature a series of five inter-connected adaptable spaces that can be divided off or opened up accordingly.  It will provide ideal spaces for both the adjacent 140-room hotel as well as the businesses based in Laguna’s 10,500 square metres of A-grade office space.

Ingrid Richards, Director of Richards and Spence, the acclaimed architectural firm behind the project, said they wanted to engender a welcoming and relaxing experience for those attending the centre.

“Each space, will feature an adjoining articulated covered and landscaped terrace that can also be divided off accordingly to create intimate spaces where delegates can gather, relax, collaborate and unwind all year-round.  They will overlook the central green space and lagoon-style swimming pool below, which will provide a relaxing experience when attending functions.  It will be lively, engaging and open, rather than closed in and claustrophobic,” Ms Richards said.

“The venue will have capacity to accommodate approximately 720 seated delegates in classic convention mode, with all the typical adjoining banquet kitchen, storage and other amenities required. The terrace will provide perfect breakout spaces. There will also be a roof terrace above the venue which will provide another space for external functions and have northern views towards the library and lake, and westward views towards the Laguna plaza and aquatic centre.”

“The convention and events centre will have direct access from the basement carpark and will be situated in a great vantage point on the site. Its relationship with the highly landscaped site around it will provide a charming experience all year-round. You’ll feel like you are in a vibrant destination, rather than a boring function space,” Ms Richards added.

Richards and Spence have designed Laguna using a restrained white brick, which will be elaborately overlaid with landscaping, to engender a classic timeless design. The convention and events centre will be part of a seamless overall precinct experience; it will be located within the same building as the onsite hotel, but importantly will be operated independently in order to ensure ready access to the venue for the local community.

Construction of Laguna is planned to commence in early 2018, with completion targeted for late 2020.
